A few numbers you already know. See what denials cost to rework and what never comes back, with every assumption shown. Practice totals only: no patient information.

A calculator beside a returned claim and a stack of coins losing a few: what denied claims cost to rework.

%

Starts at 7.5%: MGMA benchmarking puts practices’ first-submission denials at 7% to 8% (MGMA Stat, July 2026).

$

Starts at $25.20, MGMA’s published average (MGMA Stat, March 2021). It is five years old; your staff time may cost more.

%

Yours to give: denials your practice wrote off, out of all its denials. Until you do, the total is the rework alone.

%

Starts at 5%: MGMA says practices can push first-submission denials below 5% with targeted fixes (MGMA Stat, July 2026). Your choice, not a promise.

How it’s worked out, and what it leaves out
  1. Denied claims a month: claims × denial rate.
  2. Rework a year: denied claims × the cost to rework one × 12.
  3. Never recovered a year: denied claims × the share never recovered × the average paid per claim × 12.
  4. The comparison runs the same sums at the rate you chose to compare with.
  • It leaves out the cost of waiting: money that is recovered but arrives weeks late.
  • It treats every denied claim as average, and denied claims are often larger than average.
  • It knows nothing about your payers or your specialty.
